Sophie CartwrightSophie Cartwright holds an Honours Degree in Sociology from the University of Queensland. Supervised by Dr Valerie Braithwaite, Sophie's thesis examines the notion of regulatory failure through the eyes of tobacco growers from the rural community of Myrtleford in north-east Victoria. She has found that one of the outcomes of regulatory change is the formation of black market tobacco, know as "chop-chop". Her analysis has revealed that chop-chop tobacco has strengthened the relationships between growers and the community in many ways, albeit creating tensions towards government, regulatory authorities and big business. At the core of Sophie's analysis is the interpretation of how subcultures develop that oppose the values of the dominant status system that can lead to an insubordinate subculture and a prosperous black market.
